31/07 Bill Brogden steps down as the club Chairman

July 31, 2009

It is with sadness that we are announcing the resignation of Club Chairman Bill Brogden. Bill has informed the management board that due to increasing business commitments he can no longer afford the time required to be Chairman of Newbury RFC. The Board would like to thank Bill for the time and effort he has put into the role of Chairman and indeed for his other roles in the club over a 10 year period.

We are therefore seeking interested partied who would like to be considered for the role of Chairman of Newbury RFC and the other open vacancy of Financial Director. Anybody who would like to be considered should contact Dave Smith - Club Secretary c/o Newbury RFC or contact any current board member.

Contact details are here http://www.newburyrfc.co.uk/the-club/contact/

20/07 New community coaches start work

July 20, 2009

Newbury Rugby FC has appointed two new community sports coaches to join the existing coaching team. The coaches will be working across West Berkshire to introduce rugby into primary schools and improve skills in secondary schools, as well as running rugby camps. They will also coach football, cricket and athletics.

Fly-half Mitch Burton joins Newbury from Jersey, where he worked as a community sports coach. Mitch is taking his level 2 coaching award and is also experienced in coaching Kwik Cricket and football.

Chris Rowland, another new arrival at the club, has previous playing experience with Stourbridge, Bristol, Worcester, Plymouth Albion and Northampton Saints. Chris has also won 37 caps for England at under 17 to 21, and England Counties.

Mitch and Chris join current community sports coach Ien Ascroft-Leigh and Matt Styles, who is the community rugby coach. Greenham Common Trust funds the community sports roles and the community rugby role is part-funded by West Berkshire Sports.

“The support we get from Greenham Common Trust is vital in allowing us to bring promising young players to Newbury,” said Ben Sturnham, head coach at Newbury Rugby FC. “And our community coaches do a superb job in helping local schools to introduce new sports and skills to their pupils.”

Local clubs and schools looking for help with sports coaching can contact Rosie Golby at Newbury Rugby FC on 01635 230023. The community coaching team will be running a rugby camp at Newbury Rugby Club from 27–31 July. See www.newburyrfc.co.uk for more details.

20/07 ‘Sponsor a player’s car’ scheme

July 20, 2009

We are looking to businesses or individuals (or groups of members) that are willing to fund the supply of cars for specific players at Newbury Rugby Club. All sponsors will be able to take advantage of a high-profile marketing package that recognises their contribution to the club.

This scheme was successfully trialled by “The Workclothing Group” last season and it enabled us to attract two quality players to the club.

How does the scheme work?

The sponsor makes a loan to the club of £3,000 for one year. We will purchase a car, tax it and loan it to a player. The player must insure the vehicle and take out breakdown cover etc.

At the end of the season, we will sell the car and refund the proceeds to the sponsor. The amount returned to the sponsor will depend on the residual value of the car at that time but, we expect a deficit of about £500. We will offer the sponsor the chance to roll the package forward to the next season.

What do sponsors get?

In return for this, we are offering a flexible ‘marketing package’, which includes:

  • A dedicated page on the Newbury Rugby FC website displaying sponsor’s names, as well as rolling features on each of the sponsors with a link to their website
  • We will display the same webpage permanently on a large monitor in a prominent place within the club, alongside other club sponsors.
  • An advertisement in the match day programme listing the car sponsors for the duration of the season.
  • A pitch side perimeter board dedicated solely to the car sponsors.
  • The possibility to have an appropriate marketing presence at a home match with four complimentary entry tickets. For example, a display of your company’s products. Please talk to us to find what’s possible…

If you have any queries or would like to contact the club please contact Spencer Wakeling at 0759 0660 949 – spencerwakeling@newburyrfc.co.uk or Kalvin Withers at 07887 566 917 - kalvin@withers.com

We would like to thank club member Tim Sandford and his business ‘The Workclothing Group’ for trialling this scheme last season. The Workclothing Group supply quality corporate and workwear clothing for a wide range of business customers.

20/07 Colts get ready to fire

July 20, 2009

The club’s U19 and U17 colts players begin pre-season training in July. Training will continue every Thursday at 7pm and we will also run fitness sessions on Monday evenings, beginning at 7pm from the 20th July.

The whole group will train together. Neil Collins will lead the coaching team and he will be assisted by a team which will include Graham Herriott, Andy Widdop and Jamie Rogers. Other guest coaches will also be on hand at varying times throughout the season.

We will enter both groups into their respective Berks, Bucks & Oxon leagues and they will play in division 1 of those leagues. Both groups will also compete in their respective national knock out competitions.

This season will see old rivalries renewed and new challenges set. The current U19s had a very successful season as U17s. After finishing top of the BBO League and getting to the South West Final of the National U17 cup they will be seen as the team to beat! However, they will find many sides with older players and this will certainly challenge them. Fortunately a number of older Colts will be on hand to add experience and the all important strength to a very competent group of players eager to go on stage further.

The U17s will find themselves playing against teams that they may never have played against before or teams that they have not played against for some time. They have been very successful over the last four years whilst competing in the Berkshire leagues and we are all excited about what they will be able to do on this new stage both locally and nationally.
