Matt Styles

November 25, 2009

It is with great regret that we announce we are making the position of Community Rugby Coach at the club redundant. As a result Matt Styles will leave the club at the end of the year.

Unfortunatly the club is no longer in a position to fund the role which was previously funded 50% by Sport England.

In his time at the club Matt played many 1st XV games over a number of seasons. His playing time for the club was ended by injury.

We would like to thank Matt for all his contributions to the club. Matt has developed a great community rugby program and we will be working with West Berks sports development officers to try to find a way to continue this work.

Matt has proved he is well received in a school environment by pupils and teachers and has demonstrated a very professional approach. We wish Matt well with whatever he chooses to do next and he has the full support of the NRFC board.

22/11 Newbury U13 A v Overton

November 25, 2009

Newbury 48 - Overton 0

As seems customary at Overton, this game was played in filthy conditions, although the rain did relent shortly before kick off. The Newbury pack was missing a couple of players and it looked likely to be a stern test against useful opposition.
Overton kicked off with a long kick that was caught by George Bicknell, who then weaved his way through almost the entire Overton team before passing to James O’Connor to finish things off. Lee Cowan landed a magnificent touchline conversion to seal an impeccable start.
In the fifth minute Newbury produced a huge rolling maul which took them 40 metres and when the ball eventually emerged, Finn Connor was stopped just short of the line. From the resulting scrum Overton kicked to George again and he ran a lateral line before handing on to Josh Lawrence who shot down the wing and outstripped the defence to score near the posts. Lee again converted to make it 14-0.
The game then entered a long scrappy phase and there was little of note until just before half time, when an Overton breakout was ended by a thumping tackle from Newbury Captain Charles Forson. After a bright start Newbury had struggled to increase their lead and the game was still up for grabs.
This did not last long, because the half had barely begun before Theo took a tap penalty and made 30 metres before being hauled down. From the ruck Charles smashed onwards and from the ruck, replacement scrum half Dylan Myburgh darted over to score. Theo converted to make it 21-0.
Soon afterwards Scott Cullen stormed down the middle but a knock on saved Overton as the ball came out. The reprieve was temporary because another rolling maul ended with George Anderson battling his way over from close range to make it 26-0.
From the restart kick, Josh counter attacked and then Theo danced through the remnants of the defence to score under the posts for 31-0.
This time it was Scott who caught the restart and he surged over the gain line before giving it to Theo who passed to the overlapping Josh who bolted down the wing to score in the corner and make it 36-0.
Soon afterwards Newbury produced a superb passage of play with forwards and backs interlinking brilliantly and it was a shame that a knock on prevented what would have been a terrific score. However it was not long before Charles smashed through the defence and was halted just short. From the scrum good handling by the backs created an overlap for James to score his second try. Theo nailed a fine angled conversion to make it 43-0.
As the game drew to a close, Newbury ran another penalty and George Bicknell completed the scoring with Newbury’s 8th try and the game ended 48-0.
This was a fine all round team performance in difficult conditions. Overton had only been beaten once this season and competed hard, but they never really looked like scoring a try. The Newbury forwards were always winning the physical battle and produced a constant stream of possession. The backs defended stoutly and lacerated the defence continually. Hopefully this last friendly is a good omen for the League season which begins shortly.

Newbury RFC Monthly Quiz Night! 24th of September

November 24, 2009

Each month about 10 team pitch their wits against each other! We will be running the quiz monthly all season. The quiz jackpot will start at an estimated £30

There  normally ten rounds and the questions ranged from travel and music to conundrums and pictures. When the rounds are all totted up the winning team chose a key to try and open the prize cash box. Unfortunately (for them) if they don’t choose the right key so the jackpot rolls over to next month!

The next quiz night will be on Friday 24st of September 2010 in the Kickers Bar.

It would be great to get more teams to join in the fun. It’s just £1.50 per person to enter a team of no more than 6 people. Half of the team money goes into the jackpot and the other half is put in a social fund to help fund other social events that the club would like to run.

Our great new food and beverage partners, Newbury Bars and Conferencing, are now providing food.

In addition to the panini’s they will have Chef Gough’s home-made Fish Chips & Mushy Peas available

Fish, Chips & Mushy peas - £6

Last food orders’ for food taken at 21:00.

We are looking for company teams, mini and junior supporter’s teams, ladies teams and anyone who thinks they can win the jackpot! Know it all’s and duffers are all welcome!

So get a team together, chose your team name and get yourselves along to Kickers Bar for a great value evening of entertainment!
