21/02 Camberley U13A v Newbury U13B
February 24, 2010
Camberley A 24 - Newbury B 17
Newbury U13 B team just lost out to a big Camberley A side on Sunday 17-25 in very heavy pitch conditions. This was a performance however which all the boys could be proud of, with excellent commitment and strong tackling thoughout the game.
The game was very competitive from the start, but when Camberley scored a try in the corner in the first few minutes, using their big pack to advantage, heads could have gone down. Newbury responded well however with some strong tackling, and you felt they always had the speed in the backs to inflict damage. Sure enough, when when the ball was worked down the line inside the Newbury 22, George Bicknell coming in from full-back had the room and pace to score on the outside with a fine long run.
The try gave the boys more confidence, and there was some excellent defensive tackling throughout the side before George was once again released on another fine run just before half-time, to score from inside the Newbury half.
Camberley came out strong in the second half, and following a run from their big no.8, who was well tackled by James O’Connor, Camberley won a line-out close to the Newbury line, and scored in the corner from the following play.
Zach Stancombe was then retired injured, and Newbury lost some of the momentum in the forwards. Following a period of Newbury pressure, Camberley kicked-through from inside their 22, and scored in the corner from a long chase. There followed another two Camberley tries as the Newbury defence now started to tire in the heavy conditions.
There was time for one last rally, and following a period of sustained pressure, Newbury were awarded a penalty try under the posts when Adam Foster was held back following a kick-through. The try was converted to make the final score as respectable 17-25.

14/02 Newbury U14 Roebucks v Reading A’s
February 16, 2010
Roebucks bounce back from Maidenhead and take the spoils against Reading
Newbury U14 Roebucks 12 v 5 Reading A’s
Valentine’s Day and another winter’s morning at Monks Lane, cold, miserable, very cold but the Roebucks and Reading soon managed to warm the enthusiastic crowd with a display of competitive and exciting end to end rugby.
Newbury started well and with 19 players available this week it was a good chance to bring some of the guys who haven’t played but also a chance to give most of last week’s squad another chance.
Some forced positional changes always raise an eyebrow or two, Owen Jenkins at 10, his dad smiling with our Head Coach about his pace! Don’t underestimate the skills of a number 8 / lock!!
Opening exchanges as always set the tone, the training has been good and is paying off. Newbury attacking and winning ball almost at will and allowing Hugo Gardener to run free and release the back line. Wave after wave of attack was thwarted by excellent Reading defence and Newbury spent the first quarter working their way downfield rucking superbly and putting into practice the training.
Cresswell, Goodwin, Hart dominate in the rucks and the front five driving Reading backwards. Jack Sadler taking ball on the Reading put in, Captain McFarlane and fellow Prop Jack Higgs driving at everything
The backs had ample chances to get away from Reading but just lacked the self confidence to break away. Fane, Calvert and Elliot almost breaking away. New no 10 Owen Jenkins making some incisive runs…He’s not that slow Dad!…Ollie Norman breaking through and Tom Davidson just not quite getting enough space to break away to score.
Still no score and Reading put some pressure on Newbury toward the end of a close first half 0 – 0 half time.
‘Coaches View’
“This first half was a repeat of the Stags first half at Maidenhead, all the game ,all the pressure but just couldn’t convert to points. No worries though really encouraged by how much the guys stuck together and played with passion and a good skill level. Our forward play was excellent and Reading couldn’t cope with us in this area”.
Same start to the second half even with a few changes, Lock / No 8 Ben Footit to fly half, why not another big runner down the middle, a not well Castle playing really well, Ramos at centre and then hooker….Maher on at 9.
Newbury attacked and continued to run Reading wragged. Calvert stepped inside, stopped short, Castle stopped short and then after 3 phases up pops Tom Davidson to score a well worked try in the corner. 5 – 0 Newbury and maybe a flood of tries.
No such thing, whatever Newbury threw at Reading they defended and they started to pressurise Newbury by spreading the ball wide….A break by Reading and an almost certain try was stopped by the outstanding Hart who’s try saving tackle led to a huge clearance kick to give Newbury some time and breathing space. Newbury again attacked and after a number of phases spread the ball wide. Tom Davidson set up the ruck and Newbury spread the ball the other way and Ollie Hart smashed his way into score with Fly Half ( now Number 8 ) Jenkins converting 12 – 0 and about 10 minutes to play….Reading still competed well and in the final few minutes were rewarded for their efforts with a consolation try final score 12 – 5 and Newbury Roebucks victors.
Who needs romance when the Roebucks produce that on the rugby pitch!!!
‘Coaches View’
“Great result and a huge amount of credit to all. Technically we played very well and every player contributed. The training is going well and now being put on the pitch in matches. We have a good squad and competition for places is huge across the group. Thats a real plus and shows the system is beginning to work
Well done for an excellent win and performance”.
