Quiz Night 21st May – £250 Jackpot!

May 14, 2010

It’s a rollover again!

Jackpot is now estimated at £250

Each month about 10 team pitch their wits against each other! We have been running all season. The quiz jackpot is up to an estimated £250.

There  normally ten rounds and the questions ranged from travel and music to conundrums and pictures. When the rounds are all totted up the winning team chose a key to try and open the prize cash box. Unfortunately (for them) they didn’t choose the right key so the jackpot of £200 rolls over to next month!

The next quiz night will be on Friday 21st of May in the Kickers Bar.

It would be great to get more teams to join in the fun. It’s just £1.50 per person to enter a team of no more than 6 people. Half of the team money goes into the jackpot and the other half is put in a social fund to help fund other social events that the club would like to run.

Our great new food and beverage partners, Newbury Bars and Conferencing, are now providing food.

In addition to the panini’s they will have Chef Gough’s home-made Fish & Chips available

Fish & Chips - £4.50

Last food orders’ for food taken at 21:00.

We are looking for company teams, mini and junior supporter’s teams, ladies teams and anyone who thinks they can win the jackpot! Know it all’s and duffers are all welcome!

So get a team together, chose your team name and get yourselves along to Kickers Bar on Friday 21st May at 7.30pm for a great value evening of entertainment!

Summer touch rugby and rounders

May 9, 2010

NEWBURY BUSINESS TODAY/NEWBURY RUGBY CLUB
TOUCH RUGBY & ROUNDERS LEAGUES 2010

We are announcing an exciting opportunity for all businesses & private individuals, in the Newbury area, to get involved in the Newbury Business Today sponsored Touch Rugby and/or Rounders Leagues.

We will be running both leagues during the summer months, at Newbury Rugby Club. The Touch Rugby League will be played on Monday evenings & the Rounders League will be played on a Wednesday evening. The leagues will start in the week beginning Mon 28th June. The Finals of both Leagues will take place on Saturday 17th July, which will coincide with the Newbury Rugby Club Beer Festival in association with West Berkshire Brewery.

In the Touch Rugby League we are aiming to run 4 separate leagues & in the Rounders League we are aiming to run 2 separate leagues. It is hoped that each mini league will be dedicated to a specific area of business (ie, Law Firms, Estate Agents, Banks, Accountancy Firms, Building Industry etc). Each league will have only 4 teams in each. Each team will play everyone in their league once. When everyone has played each other & league positions have been determined then we will enter the knock out stages. Every team will enter some form of knock out stage.

This format will allow for each company to have “bragging rights” over the other companies in their league but then ultimately have those same rights over the other companies that enter the competition.

Initially we are looking to fill the 4 spaces in each league, in each sport. Once we have that we can then send details & rules of the competition.

In the touch rugby league each game will be 7-a-side but we will allow each team to have squads of 10 (with rolling replacements). In the rounders league each team will have 9 players, though to allow for unavailability etc we will allow teams to nominate a squad of 12. Each team will play one game a week with the Semi Finals & the Finals being played on Sat 17th July. Every team is guaranteed to reach at least the Semi Final stage. Therefore, the minimum that any team will play is 4 games & the maximum will be 5. All winning finalist will receive trophies in recognition of their success.

The cost to enter a team, in either sport, will be just £100.

What we would like, at this early stage, is some indication of interest so that we can contact you with more information. Could you therefore contact Andy Widdop on 07747 535799 or manager@newburyrfc.co.uk.

Thank you for taking time to read this & we look forward to hearing from you.

Regards
Andrew Widdop

Widdop announces senior coaching appointments

May 7, 2010

Director of Rugby Andy Widdop is delighted to announce the appointment of Andy Hickling and Mike Marchant.

Andy Hickling was last involved with The Blues two seasons ago and is highly regarded by players and supporters alike. Previously Hickling was Director of Rugby with the Army Rugby Union and is qualified to the highest level (Level 5) normally the preserve of elite National and Premiership Coaches. He is a proven motivator and somebody that you “want to play for”, he is a fantastic addition to our team. Andy will primarily be involved working with the 1st XV squad forwards.

Mike Marchant has been coaching with Newbury Blues for 5 years taking charge of the 2nd XV and more recently the development XV last season. Again Mike is an experienced coach who is very widely respected especially in Hampshire where he has been involved with the U20′s team looking for and developing new talent. Mike is also an England divisional coach. Mike will primarily be working with the 1st XV squad backs.

It is great news for Newbury Blues that we are able to put together an experienced coaching team and more announcements will be made soon. As previously stated we will be looking to improve players right across the club and having the correct coaching structure is a prime objective for Andy Widdop.
