21/02 Camberley U13A v Newbury U13B

February 24, 2010

Camberley A 24 - Newbury B 17

Newbury U13 B team just lost out to a big Camberley A side on Sunday 17-25 in very heavy pitch conditions. This was a performance however which all the boys could be proud of, with excellent commitment and strong tackling thoughout the game.

The game was very competitive from the start, but when Camberley scored a try in the corner in the first few minutes, using their big pack to advantage, heads could have gone down. Newbury responded well however with some strong tackling, and you felt they always had the speed in the backs to inflict damage. Sure enough, when when the ball was worked down the line inside the Newbury 22, George Bicknell coming in from full-back had the room and pace to score on the outside with a fine long run.

The try gave the boys more confidence, and there was some excellent defensive tackling throughout the side before George was once again released on another fine run just before half-time, to score from inside the Newbury half.

Camberley came out strong in the second half, and following a run from their big no.8, who was well tackled by James O’Connor, Camberley won a line-out close to the Newbury line, and scored in the corner from the following play.

Zach Stancombe was then retired injured, and Newbury lost some of the momentum in the forwards. Following a period of Newbury pressure, Camberley kicked-through from inside their 22, and scored in the corner from a long chase. There followed another two Camberley tries as the Newbury defence now started to tire in the heavy conditions.

There was time for one last rally, and following a period of sustained pressure, Newbury were awarded a penalty try under the posts when Adam Foster was held back following a kick-through. The try was converted to make the final score as respectable 17-25.
