South West U18s Divisional Trials: At the trials on Sunday 15th November 2009, four Berkshire players competed with forty others to get into the South West U18s Divisional squad of 26 to go to Spain for a training week and a local match and then onto fight for a place in the starting line-ups for the matches against the other three Divisions in January. We are delighted to congratulate Ben West (St Johns Marlborough & Newbury RFC) and Liam Hanna (Wellington College) on their selection. James Monger (St Batholomews & Newbury RFC) – who unfortunately suffered concussion early on – and Charlie Davey (Hartpury College & Reading Abbey RFC) both should be congratulated for their efforts in getting to the trials.
Well done to the Newbury boys from NRFC & U19′s Colts

Newbury U 19s vs Oxford U19s (Friendly, 11/10/2009)
On a wet Sunday afternoon Newbury U19 Colts played a friendly match against Oxford U19 Colts at Newbury RFC
Newbury with several players unavailable fielded a squad including several U17’s whose game had been cancelled by Bracknell.
Oxford kicked off with the wind behind them, the first ten minutes both teams seemed to be getting used to the unfamiliar wet conditions, the opposition’s defence or a spilled ball stopped any running rugby. Newbury eventually made the break through when 20 m out they won a penalty, which was taken quickly passed through the centres to new boy Paddy “OZ” Glasser on the wing to slide over 5-0 to the Blues
Oxford then managed to pin Newbury into their own half eventually winning and kicking the penalty to make the score 5-3. Another period of midfield play was broken when the ball was kicked on and quickly chased by the Newbury attack who managed to grapple the ball from Oxfords defence allowing Jack Walsh to score 10-3 to Newbury. The first half ended with Oxford camped in Newbury’s 22 eventually winning a penalty and Newbury gaining their first yellow card of the season for persistently infringing 10-6.
Time for another spurring half time talk from the coaches
The second half started as the first had finished Newbury under pressure and still down to 14 which 5mins into the second half became 13 as Newbury gained their second yellow card. Oxford kicked the penalty making the score10-9. Straight from the kick off Oxford attacked and were soon 14-10 up as a cross field kicked managed to bounce just right for their winger to collect and dive over.
This seemed to wake up the Blues and with the first yellow back on the field they pushed Oxford back into defence and a kick over the defence was chased down by
T. Thorne who managed to beat the Oxford defender to score, Paddy Glasser adding the conversion, 17-14 to Newbury.
Newbury back up to 15 and with some of the impact players now on the field started to dominate a tiring Oxford side who also got a yellow card and were down to 14 boys. Newbury took advantage of having the extra player and were quickly 22 –14 ahead after J. Futcher won the chase to another kick through the tiring Oxford defence.
Newbury brought on more fresh legs and were soon 27-14 up as (U17) H. Bate broke off the scrum down the blindside to score.
Newbury kept up the pressure for the final 10 minutes but were unable to add to their points total.
A good squad performance by all the boys on the pitch, thanks also go to the great support given by parents, family and non-playing boys

Newbury Under 19s vs Banbury (20/09/2009)
On Sunday afternoon Newbury made the long trip to Banbury and were greeted by a magnificent setting – new clubhouse with 500 seater stand, and no less than 10 pitches.
A young Banbury side were not quite so magnificent however and after 16 minutes of sizing up their opponents, Newbury made the first score. A straightforward three-quarter movement saw winger Darren Smith despatched on a 30 metre break, and when he was stopped Jamie Mcintyre was there to pick up and finish off. Two minutes later as a Banbury lineout went awry, Tom Martin, playing at an unfamiliar number 7, hoovered up and fed Ben West who rampaged through to score.
Newbury then tried to let Banbury back in a little, and a couple of wayward passes gave Banbury the chance to break downfield and pressure the Newbury line. But on 25 minutes Josh Love single-handedly restored the balance as he broke from half-way and, when stopped, took the ball from the back of the ensuing maul and broke again to score.
Tom Clark kicked 1 from 3 to leave the half-time score at 17-0.
Straight from the restart Gutteridge put in a bit hit to disrupt the catcher, Tom Martin again cleaned it up, Tom Dyer backed him up and released Martin himself again to score (unconverted, 22-0). For a while Newbury seemed to take their collective foot off the gas. Then the men in Blue woke up and one of several 30 metre driving mauls for the day produced a 5 metre lineout. The throw and Dyer’s take were textbook, the ball was released to the backs and Matt Maher broke his tackler to score (29-0 with the conversion).
On 22 minutes Josh Love scored after another 5 metre lineout produced a Newbury drive to the line. Finally on 29 minutes excellent link work (twice) by Tom Martin put Tom Clark through to add a try to his 3 conversions for the day. Two or three more tries could (and should) have followed but there were missed overlaps as all too many players showed the dreaded white-line fever. Final score 41-0.
Newbury were missing a lot of names for this match, but you could not really ask more of those that played, some in unfamiliar positions, than to deliver a 41-0 victory. Man of the match was clearly one of those in an unfamiliar role, Tom Martin, who took 15 minutes to work out what was required of a number 7, then played it like he had been doing it all his life.
Newbury Squad: Velida, Love(Sanders), Caunt(Haskins); Dyer, Craigen; West, Gutteridge, Martin; Wilson, Jenkins; Smith, T.Clark, D.Clarke(Maher), Mcintyre, Thorne; Futcher

16/09 U19′s Colts v Maidenhead

Maidenhead U19’s v Newbury U19’s – (13/09/09)
Newbury U19’s minus several players on County duty and several unavailable due to injury and other commitments travelled to Maidenhead for an early season friendly match with a squad of 17 players, some playing in unfamiliar positions.
On a very dry and hard pitch Maidenhead kicked off up the slope and into a strong cross wind straight into the arms of J. Guttridge who broke through several tackles before being halted. The next 10 mins became a stop start affair as both teams conceded penalties, Newbury infringing the most which resulted in a failed Maidenhead penalty then a few minutes later a successful kick, 3-0 to Maidenhead. This seemed to jolt Newbury into action and after several phases of forward play the ball reached the backs who made good ground before a last man tackle halted progress, the forwards who had supported well managed to keep possession allowing T. Martin to score wide out on the left, J. Guttridge narrowly missing the conversion 5-3 to the Blues. Newbury now had the upper hand and some good running rugby resulted in R. Digby making good yardage before the Maidenhead defence managed to halt his progress, the forwards were quickly in support and kept possession getting the ball out to J. Guttridge to break through several tackles and score under the posts, his conversion unluckily hitting the crossbar. Newbury kept up the pressure and were unlucky not to score on several occasions, on one such attack Maidenhead intercepted a Newbury pass and run nearly the whole length of the pitch to score under the posts and successfully kicking the conversion to make the half time score 10-10
Newbury brought on their two subs J, Caunt and W. Murray and kicked off the second half into the wind, the first 10 minutes of the second half belonged to Newbury but they could not turn their possession into points being thwarted by some good Maidenhead defence. Eventually the Newbury pressure told and some good running rugby ended with D. Craigen crashing over. THE KICKER J. Caunt narrowly pulling the conversion past the uprights 15-10 to the Blues. Newbury remained the dominant team and some good runs from Clark and Clarke in the centres threatened the Maidenhead defence but the Blues just couldn’t add to their points total. Maidenhead did get close to Newbury’s line towards the final whistle but couldn’t score, some good defence from Newbury keeping them out, J. Futcher producing a huge tackle to halt their progress.
A good solid all-round performance from the whole squad, including a good debut from new boy Bertie Haskins. Also good performances from several boys, T.Thorne, S. Wilson and J. Bartlett playing in unfamiliar positions
Newbury Squad:
J. Caunt, N. Thomas, T. Martin, B. Haskins, T. Dyer, D. Craigen, J. Guttridge,
O. Spanswick, T. Clarke, W. Murray, J. Bartlett, T. Thorne, D. Clarke, R. Digby,
