Newbury Harts got of to a slow start against eventual winners Southend and were warmed up nicely for what could be considered the best match of the pool, narrowly loosing to Maidenhead A. All the players ran their hearts out, and during the day there was some excellent passing and running. Player of the day by a narrow margin from all the others was Kieran Peppiatt.

First Match

Newbury fought hard against Wycombe’s A team with some excellent passing and tries from Finlay Rossiter, Henry Javes and Oliver. Unfortunately, Wycombe’s direct running approach breached Newbury’s tagging too many times which lead to a 3-6 defeat.

Second Match

Against Wycombe’s C team Newbury really shone through with 9 fantastic tries, some great solo efforts from Fergus and Nathan coupled with good support running and passing to avoid being tagged. Wycombe fought back well in the 2nd half which earnt them 2 tries, final score 9-2.

Tries for:

Fegus

Henry Javes

Nathan Moore-Mason

Finlay Rossiter (2)

Oliver (2)

Freddie (2)

Third Match

This was against Wycombe’s B team and was a very tense close game. Wycombe scored first then Newbury with some brilliant tagging turned over and this lead to Newbury’s first try. It was hard fought end to end stuff but with tagging done so well by both teams there were only 2 more tries for Newbury (scored by Freddie and Henry).

It was 3-3 with seconds to go when Wycombe managed one last attempt to clinch the win, final score 3-4.

Game 2

Newbury B (Harts) V High Wycombe A

Score 5 – 1 to High Wycombe

Good tagging from the Newbury players and excellent defending.

Newbury’s only try was scored by Nathaniel.

1st Match;

Newbury Roebucks played with sprit but were unfortunately beaten soundly 6 tries to 2 by a stronger team.  The Roebucks were disallowed two tries, the first for not placing the ball firmly over the line and a second for the scoring player having both tags one side.  This may sound harsh but the players need to start to understand the rules and a few shocks like this will drive it home better than any coach could.  Without these two simple mistakes the score of 6 to 4 would have looked more respectable.  Kieran Peppiatt was the hero for Newbury in scoring both of our tries and showed good game awareness.  The rest of the team showed willing and they all supported each other and did not get down hearted.

2nd Match;

Your correspondent is pleased to report that this was a far more enjoyable game to watch with Newbury Roebucks winning 9 tries to 4.  Again Kieran Peppiatt played a key role in this victory by scoring 3 tries and was complimented by William Stephens who scored an impressive 5 tries.  Oliver Davey scored one try following a good piece of supporting play and finished a real team effort to place the ball over the line.  Your correspondent does not know if the two High Wycombe teams were of different skill levels or the first defeat gave the Roebucks the determination to lift their game but it was fun to watch.

 1st Match U8 Newbury A-v-Maidenhead A
 Maidenhead 6 – Newbury 7 (tries: Gregor 1st & 2nd, Fergus 3rd, 5th & 6th, Theo, 4th, Henry 7th)

Great closely fought game with Newbury playing some of their most flowing rugby I’ve seen. Great running, supporting and passing. Great tagging in particular by Fergus who also scored the try of the game (3rd) where he ran the entire length of the pitch, beating many of their players, on the way to scoring. Henry scored the winner in the last minute.
Man of the Match – Fergus

 2nd Match U8 Newbury A-v-Aylesbury
 Aylesbury 3 – Newbury 5 (tries: Ben 1st, Fergus 2nd, Theo 3rd, Freddie 4th, Fin 5th)

Another great game with Newbury winning after coming from behind. Great running, support and passing again. Try of the match (3rd try to bring us level) was scored by Theo, who beat 3 defenders with some great stepping. Fin’s tagging was also superb throughout this game, as was his own individual try.

Man of the Match: Theo

 3rd Match U8 Newbury A-v-Tring A
 Tring 7 – Newbury 6 (tries: Ben 1st & 4th, Theo 2nd, Fin 3rd, Freddie 5th, Gregor 6th

Very tough game. Tring were a very strong outfit and their tagging and defending just about toppled Newbury on this occasion. Tring scored to win with the last play of the game. This game could have gone either way but Tring earned their victory against very worthy opponents.
 Man of the match: Ben

 4th Match U8 Newbury A-v-Henley A
 Henley 5 – Newbury 2 (tries: Fergus 1st, Theo 2nd)
The second loss of the day but Henley were great at defending and tagging. Closing Newbury down and forcing them sideways. The U8 pitches were very small and Newbury found breaking their defence to score very difficult. Newbury were also unlucky with a few crucial decisions going against them.

Man of the Match – Fergus.

 5th Match U8 Newbury A-v-Oxford Harlequins A
 Oxford 6 – Newbury 5 (tries: Theo 1st & 5th, Fergus 2nd, Ben 3rd, Fin 4th)
Newbury’s final game and what a closely fought one it was. It was end to end, with tit-for-tat tries being scored throughout. Both team scored some fantastic tries showing great running and handling. Newbury almost clinched a draw with the final play of the game, just being pushed into touch right in the corner in the dying seconds.

All in all, the rugby from every U8 player on show in Maidenhead was top daw. The improvement in the quality of the play from both Newbury A & B teams was absolutely amazing. Many of the opposition teams were very physical and the Newbury boys were very brave and played with determination. The way the players supported each other in both defence and attack, passed and caught while on the run, was brilliant. Handling mistakes could be counted on one hand! Had the A Team’s tagging been 10% better they would have won all their games! Newbury A also need to work on more direct running, especially now the new 7 tag hand-over limit rule is in force….

Player of the Day: Fergus Walker

A great day, with weather to match!

Newbury B vs Maidenhead

The first play in the game against Maidenhead quickly led to a turnover when Nathan ran away and scored the first try. Our boys’ defence was outstanding with relentless tagging. The score remained 1:0 until after half time when Joe and Kieran P. each contributed to the final 3:1 score.

Newbury B vs Aylesbury

More superb defence, especially by Joe in the first half. Tries by Nathan, Joe and Gus in the first half and Kieran P., Nathan and two more from Joe in the second half and the team took a 7:3 win.

Newbury B vs Oxford Harlequins

A quick turnover and Harry Murphy got the first try. The defence was again very good. Further tries were scored by Nathan (twice) and Kieran C. But the last try after a long run down the field by William snatched victory for the Blues just before the final whistle.  Final score 5:4.

Newbury B vs Tring

More good defence, but the team were up against a good side. Tries were scored by Harry M, William (another amazing run from way back), Kieran P, Henry S, Kieron C(2) and Gus. This was a real nail-biter of a match culminating in a 7:7 draw.

Newbury vs Henley

Henley were so far unbeaten in this competition and Newbury B were getting tired. Despite good support by our players there were too many turn overs at the try line. Tries were scored by Joe, Gus and Nathan. It was a valiant effort by the team but in the end Henley were too good. Final score 4:8.

Newbury Blues were runners-up in their tournament of six teams. Henley were the winners.
