Newbury Ladies impress with nine try haul
January 28, 2010
After several weeks of postponed games and with only 1 full training session since Christmas, Newbury Ladies traveled to Farnborough for their first league clash of 2010.
On a dry, bright day the stage was set for an open and competitive game. Newbury made several changes to the starting lineup with Leanne Carrod making her first start in the Front Row and Emma “Bubblewrap” Button was captain for the day.
The hosts looked more organised from the kick off and Newbury who had not played since 13th December looked rusty and out of sorts. Putting that aside the Newbury pack managed to contain the forward effort of a committed and enthusiastic Farnborough pack.
After 10 minutes the Newbury pack found their feet and started to feed the sharp looking back line with some ball. This resulted in the 1st try being scored with the conversion by Fly Half Laura Smith. This gave the Newbury pack a boost of confidence and from a solid scrum a 2nd try was scored and converted again by Smith. Score 14 - 0.
Farnborough then had the bit between their teeth and started applying pressure on normally granite like Newbury Scrum. This resulted in several scrums being lost and a wake up call to the pack. Never the less it was Newbury’s back row that kept the Farnborough team on the back foot, they were immense and deserve a mention in dispatches.
Newbury managed to bag a brace of try’s before half time which Smith missed her only conversion of the day. An immense kicking display with 8 out of 9 conversions made. Half time score 26 - 0.
Newbury made some positional changes during the break to shore up the scrummage, but it was Farnborough who started the 2nd half as they did the first and from some sustained pressure they scored a well deserved try after 5 mins. At this point Newbury needed to regain their shape and composure, but Boro’ continued to press the Newbury line. But it was the back line who wanted the ball. The pack gave a platform for the ball to be given to the backs to run riot. It was Captain Button who bagged a hat-trick of try’s in 15 mins and the reliable boot of Smith kept the scoreboard ticking.
The Boro heads went down and forwards raised the tempo of the game especially at the breakdown. Helen Mitford was sweeping up the loose ball and prop Kim Myers put in a solid performance. A special mention must go to Lou Goodall for the support from a scrum to set up the try of the game, she beat the back row from a scrum to support Button with some perfect passing and interplay, all this from the front row.
Newbury continued to score with ease and the game ended with Newbury’s best result of the season 61 - 5.
Although a few names were mentioned everyone played extremely well and everyone can be proud of the result. Newbury Ladies are now looking forward to the next league fixture against Tabard at Monks Lane on the 14th February.
Newbury Ladies are always on the lookout for new players and we train on Wednesday’s 7pm - 9pm. Just turn up and you will be made welcome. Newbury entertain Rosslyn Park II on Sunday in a friendly match. Kick Off 2pm.
