Hats
off to the Blues
|
Newbury
Rugby Club have got the early season off with a bang by holding a Barbecue
and Fun evening at the rugby Club at Monks Lane. This season the Newbury
Blues are taking the theme of the Blue Brothers to heart and will be
donning black trilbies and dark glasses for the home games. The ‘Follow the
Blues’ theme will help raise the profile of the one of the UK’s top 25
rugby clubs and boost gate numbers and support across the region.
The 2007/2008 season begins on the 1st of September with a home game
against Bedford Blues. This year is expected to be full of surprises with
the new Head Coach, Chris Dossett adding some exciting new talent to the
squad while building on the playing style for which Newbury is renowned.
The crowd are being encouraged to support the team
by joining in the fun.
The photograph shows a group of Blues supporters throwing their hats in the
air with excitement at the prospect of a great season ahead.
The Blues Brothers are famed for their sharp dress, quick footwork and
great music. The Newbury Blue come a close second to the first 2 but their
after match singing leaves a bit to be desired. But how will you know if
you don’t go.
Find out more about the Blues by visiting www.newburyrfc.co.uk or checking

announcing information and the Agenda
with regard to this year’s AGM, which will be held on Tuesday 26th June

Your attendance at the AGM is highly valued by the Management Committee as
it is the main forum for us to understand the views and aspirations of the

Together with this notice we have updated next seasons membership. We have had to make a small
increase in the cost of membership, which is to cover significantly
increased utilities costs and rates, although we have been able to keep the
entrance price for adults the same as for the 2006/07 season. We are
continuing to keep entrance for U16s free.
We have introduced a new membership database during the last season and you
will see some changes with regard to the way in which the membership
application form is laid out and your membership number. Increasingly, the
club will be notifying members of club events via email and I would urge
you to complete your email details on the membership form so that you will
know what is going on at the club.
Please note that there is a 10% reduction in your membership fee if you
renew before 30th June.
Thank you all for your support throughout the season and on behalf of your
Committee we hope you all have a most enjoyable summer and look forward to
seeing you at the AGM on Tuesday 26th June.

Well
three more wins and we are at Twickenham!
It was certainly a curates egg of a performance.
Ten minute spells at the beginning of each half took us away from a
battling Halifax
side at a muddy monks lane. The first forty
minutes were otherwise average and after racing into a twelve point lead we
then made some simple errors to stop any further points scoring.
We eventually scored seven tries and as a result, after Mondays draw, we
now face the winners of Bradford and Bingley and Bridgewater Albion away in
a few weeks. Not a bad draw, avoiding fellow national one sides but a tough
trip to either club awaits.
The trick is to be in the hat for the next round. That was achieved and one
more win and the quarter finals will be the next
draw to wait on!
Did I tell you I had a good feeling about the cup this year?!

15/01/07 Ben's View!
Well, I think I have just about stopped thinking about Saturdays
last minute defeat to the pirates!
Hugely disappointed that we didn't finish them off and claim a good victory
but we can only blame ourselves in giving away vital territory and points
and vital times in the game. Yes, there were a few moments maybe we felt we
could have had more luck with but the facts remain we were ahead at the end
of the first and second half and in their twenty two and failed to
capitalise on our position.
But no time to mope and this weekend we are at home again and a cup tie
against a good Halifax
side. A great opportunity awaits us to get back on track and show our
ruthless side. See you there.

05/12/06 Ben's View!
Firstly, well done the Tykes. They were the best side we have played this
year and I hope they finish top come the end of the season. They have pace out wide and structure inside that and with Stuart
Lancaster at the helm, they are quietly going about their business to gain
re entry back into the premiership. We were not helped by Adam Harris’s
very early dismissal nor the squad withdrawal of
Dan Smaje at the eleventh hour but really for the first twenty minutes,
things didn’t go our way and Leeds in
effect had done enough to put themselves in an unassailable lead. At one
point at 28-13 down I thought we were going to make it 28-20, but we failed
and with Mark Ireland also on the floor injured, Leeds
saw the two man advantage and raced in to seal the win. We had four players
leave the field with knocks and I should know later in the week if any are
doubts for the weekend but it looks hopeful. All in all enough positives to
take solace in and all eyes are on London Welsh at home this Saturday and
hopefully, more strides forward in terms of performance. Let’s hope, after
the last two weeks, the conditions are a little more favourable for
spectators and players alike!

Ben's View!
The blues were rewarded with an excellent half of rugby into the wind to
set up this five point league victory over a useful and energetic Otley
side. Another excellent Mal Roberts try set the
standard and we finished things off with a great team try by man of the
match Ali James after he had scored an sineen solo effort again from first
phase ball. No injuries were reported and Ireland,
Rees, Smaje and Damu should all be fit for contention for the squad this
weekend against Waterloo
after missing out last week. The goal of top eight by Xmas is getting
closer and a win away next week could push us into that league position. A
very important couple of weeks coming up but with four out of the last six
games won and narrow losses with bonus points in the other two, the side is
hitting form at the right time.

23/10/06 Ben's
View!
Well we left it late on Saturday!
In fact in our last three consecutive victories we have come from
behind each time and against Pertemp Bees we scored 27 unanswered points in
the second half and two very late converted tries to beat a dangerous Bees
side.
Kenny Bingham’s try was another we have scored from first phase
ball. Its almost one per game now that we are managing from the back
formations we have this year rather than set moves and its really pleasing
that this aspect of our game is going well because it shows that our game
understanding is increasing too. Our last try was simply majestic. After a
few phases and from his own 22, Mal Roberts capped a fine performance with
an outstanding individual effort which included out pacing the cover before
chipping the ball twice before touching down under the posts for the
victory and some pretty happy visiting fans!!
The momentum is continuing to gather and now this weekend we welcome
Plymouth to
Monks lane, which I am sure will be the hardest test so far for us in
October. But we are back at home after two weeks away and once again no
injuries were recorded on Saturday and with Mark Ireland and David Rees
also looking likely to be fit, the squad is looking great for the weekend.
Another victory for the second team again underlines our strength at the
moment.
The first and second team have won six out
of six in October but all our focus is now on this Saturday. It’s no good
winning on the road if it isn’t backed up by a great home performance this
weekend.
We are also delighted that Stuart Dickinson, the Australian
International referee is in the middle for the game against Plymouth. The
following weekend he is running touch at the England
game against the All Blacks after which he is refereeing them against France the
following weekend. It’s fantastic to have a world class operator in the
middle at Monks lane and with former players also returning to celebrate 10
years at Monks Lane
and the team on a roll; it’s all set for a great Saturday in West Berkshire! See you there!

Slowly slowly, catchy monkey!
Fifteen minutes of what I consider the way we should be playing for the
full eighty gave us the win on Saturday.
We scored two tries,
could have had another two as well in that period and it effectively blew
away an industrious Moseley side. The home side are
obviously building a squad of mainly home grown, local talent and they
never gave up at any point.
The likes of rodwell, evans, knight, thomas and colvin are young and on a
fast learning curve and I have no doubt when they get their next win, the
confidence will push them up to the higher eschelons of the league. If they
hadn't caused problems for us in the lineout, I think the score would have
been greater but we still had to defend at the end to avoid a converted try
and a potential loss. The plus points though are well in our favour.
The purple patch we had, showed our potential and what we are trying to do.
Playing like that for ten minutes will I believe win games but if we are to
achieve what I want - then we need to play like that for as long as
possible. October is a big month for us and we have two big games coming
up. But we are getting there and a win this weekend would put us level with
our first seven games results last year. More importantly it would also put
us back on track and on form for what I hope will be a big run. Mark
Ireland and David Rees are both hopefully to be fit for selection, minor
knocks that should be fine and that means, once
again we are at full fitness throughout the squad. The second team continue unbeaten, notching up their sixth straight
win and they continue to put pressure on the first team and places in the
squad. Pertemps will be a hard place to go on Saturday, no doubt about
that. But to be improving and winning, the avalanche feeling we had hope for is beginning to take shape. Momentum is
gathering

Ben's View!
Last weekend we got back to winning ways. I probably take too much notice
of what people write on message boards on the internet but to all the
supporters that feel unhappy with us at the weekend then I'm sorry you feel
that way! We are not top of the league, unbeaten as you would I'm sure
like. In fact no one in the league has a 100% record. But we did beat a
decent side at home and we are certainly going to get better. The positives
far outweigh the negatives at the moment. Yes, for seventy minutes most of
the rugby was forgettable but the last ten minutes were pretty good for
excitement and the lads are trying hard to play the right way. I went to
the wasps game on Sunday and if two teams packed
full of world class players can deliver a poor display like that, then I
think we can be excused for having the odd flat game too! Poor rugby
matches can be very poor but the good ones..............can be worth the
wait!
No injuries, players returning to fitness, we are in good shape to play
well in October and climb the table. See you all at Moseley this Saturday -
its not far and your support is as ever
invaluable.

Ben's View!
My initial reaction to our loss to Bedford
was the same which I have now having analysed our DVD of the game and had
the benefit of hindsight. For Seventy minutes we had the upper hand in
almost every area and then we made four errors that led to Bedford’s late rally. I don’t need to log
and describe those in the public domain but although small individually
they all had a big impact on the result.
The good news is we don’t need to start all over again. We just need to
continue to eradicate these sill mistakes. We actually were pretty error
free on Saturday but then we hit that clump of mistakes that caused our
downfall. If we can add a good last ten minutes to the performance on Saturday
then we can go to Cornwall
on Sunday ready to deliver another improved result. Everything is possible
and its still far too early to get carried away in
winning or losing in National One yet. A long way to go and a good run is not far away.
On the injury front we are in good shape with players returning rather than
becoming unavailable and another good week
training will keep us moving forward. Of course I was disappointed on
Saturday but we are going in the right direction and getting better –
that’s always good!

Ben's View!
Saturday saw
our first win of the season following a solid and very encouraging team
performance.
The week had been mixed as far as preparation was concerned. A session as
good as I could hope for was had last Tuesday - almost collectively it felt
like the penny had dropped and players were understanding each other and
the framework so much better. Thursday was a session you unfortunately
sometimes have. Trains were cancelled from London which meant some players couldn't
be there and Gregor Hayter picked up a knock that ruled him out for the
game against the welsh. It meant plenty of
reshuffling and gave matt styles a start. We have made a few changes as far
as away preparation is concerned and arrived in south west London ready and prepared.
The game itself was much as we had anticipated. London welsh played runners of 9 and 10
and used the midfield to get beyond the gain-line. Our defence has changed
dramatically and we forced them into a high error count that really never
let them get going. The first half was, after an early threat by welsh,
predominantly ours and we scored two good tries to go in ahead. Liam Gibson
also had a try disallowed which on the DVD looks to be fine as far as the
grounding is concerned so some other infringement must have occurred for
the points not to have been awarded.
The second half began to show our forwards gaining the upper hand and we
gave them big problems in the set piece, especially at lineout. Our
analysis had been worth it in this area and we feel that the banks of data
we are slowly building on all our opposition will reap the rewards as the
season goes on.
A Tim Walsh drop goal sealed the win and I think everyone felt relieved and
vindicated that we had finally got the show on the road. London welsh looked a better side than
last year. Our pressure in defence twinned with their over eagerness to put
in a good first home showing of the season really lead to them only playing
in fits and starts. We controlled things well and began to show signs of
our ability to play at a tempo beyond the oppositions grasp.
This league is pretty tight in so many respects this season and I'm sure
our opponents will have a decent season. For us its
the start. Huge amounts of work to go into still to get us to the
consistent level we want, but its a step forward.
We have a far better side than last year and its
going to be an exciting season as the team begin to find their gears.
See you on Saturday for the arrival of Bedford blues. Beaten twice by a fair
margin last season home and away. Saturday will show how far we have come -
I can't wait.

Ben's View!
It's not all
doom and gloom and you know.
Of course everyone is entitled to their opinion but don’t dissect the team
or the performance quite yet. Last year's issues in defence haven’t
resurfaced and our set piece was more than solid against Doncaster.
Yes, we lost and I can assure you we are all bitterly disappointed about
that. But it’s a long season and the good thing about that is we get a
chance immediately to gain our first win next weekend against Leeds. I'm sure their supporters are hugely
disappointed and will want their side to bounce back against us. Well,
strangely, so will we.
The opening day's fixtures are never a good indication of the overall
season and there are still 29 games left, so plenty of winning rugby
possible. I have a great belief in this year's squad and I really think
they are capable of having a truly memorable season - for all the right
reasons.
So, it’s a week of attending to the technical areas we have to, using the
analysis we have on Leeds to our advantage
and making sure on Saturday we have fine tuned our game enough to get to
where we want for the future weeks to come. Our first home league game is
always a great occasion and to welcome a side like the tykes will make it
even more memorable.
With the 2nd XV securing a very good 28-5 away win against Bournemouth, competition is high for places and we
all will work hard to get things right on Saturday.
See you there. - Ben Ryan

Tom
Brown
|
05/06/06
- Newbury Sign Tom Brown
Tom is a dynamic, powerful ball carrier who hits the line at pace and is
very hard to contain. Already with 7 Wales U21 caps, his devastating power
also brought a lot of super league interest and his Rugby
league CV includes a full Wales Cap.
Whilst in contention for pre –season matches last year at Worcester, he injured his shoulder, which
required a reconstruction. This has limited his appearances to the second
team, but he is now fully recovered and has played regularly since early
February. After many recommendations, including one from Johnny Tuamoheloa,
Tom comes to us as our sixth new forward for next season.
Height: 6' 2" Weight: 17st 7lb Position: 8

24 Heineken cup and challenge cup games. he has
also played at all the England
age groups as well as representing England against the barbarians.
Jon is now looking to explore life outside professional rugby and gain work
experience and a university degree, so comes to Newbury with a real desire
to add to the club, enjoy his rugby without the pressures of a full time
contract and contribute to a winning culture and ethos that is being formed
at the blues.
Jon is a specialist tighthead who played 19 premiership games last season
and has made 80 premiership appearances having previously been with
Harlequins. Jon is a big but mobile forward with a great work rate. He is a
tremendous scrummager and is a very astute player and tactically really
aware.

to that whilst studying in Exeter
he played for the Chiefs gaining 37 appearances. With over 50 games in
National One already, Adam again fits the profile as an up and coming,
talented footballer in his mid twenties that will add more competition in
what is fast becoming a very exciting squad for the 2006/7 campaign.

Morgan. Chris joins us from Bristol
where he has made over forty appearances for them.
At 6ft 2 and 108kg Chris can play at 6,7 or 8 and

Gregor Hayter
|
Newbury RFC is
delighted to announce the signing of Gregor Hayter
(198cm / 115kg 6ft 5in/ 18st 1lbs)
Gregor joins us from Glasgow Warriors. Very much in the David Lubans
mould, Gregor can play eight or lock with equal ability and for a player of
his size, he is very athletic and mobile around the park. We are sure he
will be a key signing for us and I am sure will show the Fans at Monks lane
the sort of cut and thrust that has seen him appear in the Scotland
training squad twice this season.
